aRTSY fARTSY

hello.

Just wanted to share some experiences of different theater places which i have visited since i first had any interest in the Arts scene.

The very first theater which i had visited was Actors Studio Bangsar when it was located underneath dataran Merdeka. I had only been there a couple of times but it left a lasting impression on me. The theater was definitely smaller and less glamorous than its current re-incarnation at BSC. I remembered it being a shoe box shaped and quite small and rather claustrophobic. Air circulation was not all that great and we would end up sweating if the place was full. I dun remember clearly whether it had any functional sound or lighthing system. But to me, that was how a theater should be after a steady diet of reading books and being exposed to similar designs on the idiot box. For me, it was an experimental theater, full of dark images, dodgy sound and lighthing systems, seedy looking theater go-ers and shows which were much maligned by the ordinary folk.
Remember city hall and the vagina monologues, holy jeez, c'mon people, it was an art theater, an experimental one at that and it allowed people who had creative juices an outlet to showcase their talents. We can't allow red tape and bureaucracy to stifle our local artists creative juices! So kudos to all of those people who banded together to overcome such obstacles.
I remembered Faridah at the shop opposite of the theater. it was littered with all kinds of interesting knick knacks from books to videos to posters and everything else imaginable which you could associate with the art world. Faridah always had a smile whenever we went to her shop or theater and as always until now, she has a ready smile to people like me who love the arts but can't tell jack shit from a legal text(i'm trained as a lawyer, but i'm pretty crappy at what i do) or a manuscript. Truly a kindred spirit of the art world.
It was from Actors studio bangsar which i had experienced my first theater and from there, my interest for the arts, whether conventional or otherwise, started and my heartful thanks to those people at the original ASB in dataran for helping me realised that i had a passion for the arts, albeit as just an onlooker and not a participant.
I'll tell more of the places i have been in my later blogs.

I mmg tua..very the old and ancient with creaking bones and wrinkly skin, but those were the times when there was an element of risque and exploration in theater, now its so bloody commercialised!
